I remember the day I reached out to my own breath. It was early 2023. It had been an extra challenging day at work - emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. When I got home, I felt completely and utterly drained. My body felt heavy and unsettled, and so did my mind.
I had that evening to myself. As I sat there, journalling on my bed, I suddenly remembered a friend’s tip on checking out Breathwork. On that evening I took her up on it and I’ve not looked back since. To say that it changed me on a cellular level would be an understatement. But that’s exactly what my own breath did for me.
I remember sitting on my bed following along to this simple breath practice on Spotify. My mind chatter was incessant to begin with. I could feel my eyelids flutter. The exhaustion from the demands of the day were everpresent in my body and mind. But, bit by bit, breath by breath, I found myself becoming more present. I found my eyelids settling and my mind easing off on the chatter.
Day by day, my breath practice deepened. I was completely and utterly infatuated by my own breath. I couldn’t get enough of it. I noticed how my mind wasn’t as busy anymore. I noticed how I had started to loosen my grip on my mind, and not letting every little negative thought spiral out of control. I started to notice when my breath was out of balance or when I was breathing superficially. And I started to naturally incorporate the techniques I was learning about into my daily life.
It was a practice that helped me cultivate a deeper connection between my body, mind and soul; to bring them into harmony, to notice when I was getting swept off by my mind or my emotions and to gently call my self back home.
Our breath is the air that sustains us, that sustains life. Our bodies do it automatically that we don’t even have to think about it.
But the true power of our own breath is when we choose to breathe consciously.
Our breath is the sacred pause in the midst of the chaos of life.
Our breath is our pathway to a deeper self-connection.
Our breath is our pathway to our wellbeing.
Our breath is our permission slip to simply be with what is.
Our breath is our life force.
